THE SCHOOL AND OUR WORK

ABOUT US

...................................................................................

The Flavio Galo Marimba and Guitar School was founded in 1996 in memory of the Christian singer, Flavio Galo, as a cultural and social initiative that ended up being the emblematic project of the Flavio Galo Foundation. It’s a cultural initiative, because it seeks to rescue Nicaraguan art and culture, and it’s a social initiative, because it seeks to make a positive impact in the Nicaraguan society by offering a healthy recreational activity and helping people of less financial means.

From the day it opened its doors to today, the school has had the privilege of teaching and training more than 3000 children, youth and adults in the art of playing marimba and guitar. Aside from the musical directors, the school also has the help of a significant group of young instructors that were once students at the Flavio Galo School and that now have years of experience playing their instrument. It’s this new generation of musicians that now teaches the students at the school to play their instrument!

This brings us to another important work of the school: training new instructors, whether it be for the Flavio Galo Marimba and Guitar School or for other similar cultural initiatives like the one at the Catholic Church in Waslala, the Oscar Arnulfo Romero Community Center in Nandaime, "La Esperanza" Women’s Penitentiary System, and Hogar Zacarías Guerra.

It’s because of all of this that the Flavio Galo Marimba and Guitar School is the only one of its kind in Nicaragua, and it has the acknowledgment of the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture (Instituto Nicaragüense de Cultura). The school is located in the Hogar Zacarías Guerra, which freely allows us to use its campus through a cooperation agreement. This makes it possible for us to teach approximately 300 students, of which 75 are low-income students that receive full scholarships from the Flavio Galo Foundation.
