Marimba music director, Gary Portocarrero, organized a small workshop with musician and percussionist Terry Joel Bolaños Galeano. Terry is studying the 4th year of the Bachelor's Degree in Orchestral Instrument (Percussion) at the Harmodio Arias Madrid Campus of the Domo University of Panama.
During the workshop Terry was able to share his knowledge on several topics. First, he shared techniques to lengthen the sound of the notes, whether by trill, tremolo, drum roll or grupetto. He also talked about Gary Burton's and Leigh Howard Stevens' playing techniques, which are two different ways of holding two mallets in one hand. Terry showed each technique, explained what situation each one is best suited for, and talked about the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Thirdly, he talked about rhythmic language and how to make sense of musical phrases when performing or practicing a piece or musical study. Finally, Terry shared a bit about his life experiences as a music student in Panama.
We want to thank Terry for his visit to the Marimba School and for sharing his knowledge and experience with the marimba instructors!
